I've heard about this is in lots of places and there are also amny places in the Muslim world where women are slaves and oppressed cruelly, am I correct in thinking this?

Can anyone clarify all this?

If you don't understand a religion you look at books written by Muslims. You don't ask questions on a Yahoo site full of bigots and racist and people who believe everything the media says.

I am a Muslim girl. I don't wear a veil. In my religion it does state that I should but I don't feel ready to wear it. We are not classed as second class citizens. I live in the Uk go to university like any other white girl.

The Quran states that women should wear veils for their own safety, to protect themselves. I want you to answer me one question:

How many times have you heard of men wanting to rape a woman who is wearing a scarf on her head. They like to look at women who have their hair open and those who dress in clothes that show her figure. They are not interested or particularly aroused by women in veils. Think about what gets said about women in the western world who dress provocatively. Women are second class citizens all over the world.

ISLAM was the only religion who did not see women as evil.

Christians blame Eve for man's fall, she is condemned in the Bible

Hindu women had to jump in their husband's funeral pyre because their life may as well be over.

ISLAM never condemned women, everything is done to protect women. Whilst every law in every land denied women's rights. Islam from the beginning gave women rights to own property.

This religion has never changed its teachings, they are still valid now. The Bible, Talmud, Torah etc have all been changed to accomodate what is happening now.

I feel depressed that Muslims are hated so much. If you have any questions ask a Muslim woman. What kind of anwers do you expect from people who know nothing about my religion?

Finally: Why don't you look around you, at white 'free' women, they are all still under the control of men. They pose naked for magazines, films etc and regularly humiliate and degrade themselves calling it Women's Liberation! What a joke!

No you are not correct in thinking that. The veil was originally warn in Ancient Greece as a mask of being upper class. Later being bare faced for a women was a mark of being a prostitute much like a lit sign on a taxi. The democratic Athenians (who didn't give women the vote) the made it a social stigma for "good" women to go out of the house. Only female prostitutes were allowed out of the house. The veil was also used by the Byzantian (christian) women as a mark of being upper class. Persian women also used veil for the same reason. Muslim women use the veil as a mark of decency. What was a mark of decency in the Muslim world appears to be going the way of the Athenian world where peer pressure is forcing women to conform but as it is other women that are enforcing the rules, its the same with female genital mutilation women forcing it on women.

Basically islam is a strict and male dominated religion, they beleive & do blindly what has been written in their holy book Quran by some prophet. It is said that the sight of women arouse or excite feelings and passions of men and diverts them from the true path. So they keep themselves covered to all men only except their husbands. This is the reason they are even not allowed to go to the Mosques for prayer only the men go there.
Lemme tell you muslim females are very beautiful with a flawless butterlike skin just becoz they are always covered & away from sun.

I am not a muslim but have been to the gulf coutries on various occassions

There were some ancient texts which told the story of how angels came to earth and had sex with human women who then gave birth to giants. The veils were supposedly to keep the women's faces hidden from those angels.
The purpose has probably changes since then but this is how I understand the belief started long ago.

Paper shufflers do not look at you in the mushter. But hypnotists do! With the western (English/American) Society based on confrontation, why should a different society culture be smashed by an uppity Labour politician?

Actually, muslim women who chose to wear headscarves out of their own free will do so because they think it's plain decent, and because it's a part of their cultural identity that they don't want to lose. It has nothing to do with religion, though, it's really a cultural thing.
Personally, I also believe that they do it because their men are üigs who are horny as hell and would jump at any girl who looks more or less indecent or less covered up then most. If I had to live amongst such men, I would cover myself up, too.

The reason I was given by a Muslim woman I worked with is that the sight of women inflames the passion of men and tempts them from the true path. So they keep themselves covered to all men except their husband. She went on to say "would you dangle meet in front of a hungry man and not expect him to eat? And when it comes to sex most men are hungry!"

I believe that the main reason Muslim women wear veils is because they have been socialised by Muslim men to believe that this ridiculous garment is beneficial and they do not have the wit or intelligence to transcend the oppressive restrictions of perverted Muslim thought.

I also believe that many of your answerer's, the ones who critasised you or argued with you are as thick as two short planks.
