No one can say for certain how long a goldfish's memory is. However, we can say with certainty that it is longer than 3 seconds. It make absolutely no evolutionary sense to have a memory that short. It make no neurobiological sense either. Neuroscientists actually use goldfish in laboratories to study memory. I have no idea where the myth started that goldfish have 3 second memories, but it's complete baloney.

I know that gold fish have the memory of 3 seconds, but I'm sure other bigger fish have much longer memories. I think goldfish's memory is so short because their brains can't be very big and I bet they are easily distracted from anything they start thinking

I don't know how long a fish's memory is, although there was a recent video i saw where a scientist had trained a school of goldfish to do a little swimming "routine" I guess you could call it. So, they do have memory although who knows how long it is.

i would think it would be more than that cause if they're swimming around it the wild and a big fish tried to eat them- i think they would need to know for next time. but perhaps after all the selective breeding (since goldfish are naturally brown) their brains got bred down into nothingness... :) not sure

Depends what you want them to remember. Goldfish can be trained to come up to the top of their tank for food, and can remember that for years. They may also be able to remember the location of objects in their tank for at least several days. However, when it comes to more complex things they have difficulty remembering them at all.
