To root a woody plant (as opposed to something with a soft stem like a flower), use rooting hormone, which is probably the white powder you heard about. One brand is Rootone, but I'm sure there are others. Cut a small bit off the bottom of the plant to expose fresh tissue, dip the cut in the rooting powder, and put it in a pot of moist soil (NOT water). Keep the soil moist, and keep the plant in moderate light, and with luck it will root.

The size of the stick sounds to be to big for good root cells also the leaves will wilt no matter what you do. So if this is the type of tree you want then you need to get a smaller branch one that is very young and cut all the small branches and leaves off, you want the branch about 1/2 to 3/4 " in diameter and you want a section near the bottom where a small branch was growing make a fresh cut in it about 1/2 to 3/4 " below the branch junction trying to get more than one branch junction and dip it in Root Tone or Hormone covering the entire cut off section and the area where the branches was you cut off. Push it in to a pot of potting soil deep enough to cover all the root tone covered area and keep it well watered. Some trees and bushes such as Pusey Willow will root right in plain water. It will start throwing new leaves when the root system begins to mature. Don't let it dry out and Don't get in a big hurry it takes time. Another way to get cuttings is called Air Wrap if that doesn't work for you, you might try air wrap.

could it be root tone or like sounding. I know it has started a lot of cutting's for me./his is something I did a few years ago. I dug a hole about 20inches in dia and about two feet deep I filled a black garbage bag with leaves /grass or what ever was on the ground and put the bag in the hole filled with water .I jammed 6 sycamore limbs 1 1/2 in dia.my neighbor cut from his tree .every limb took roots and I then took them out after a few years and planted in my back yard. it's like instant tree's

generally all these answers are ok except you might as well try to get roots from an iron rod!! only a few plants will make roots in this fashion,, i.e. fig trees can be probagated this way!! so you need to know which "sticks" to use!!! after all there IS a reason plants have seeds and nuts and such!!
