Use grey or brown rather than black.
Start from the middle of your upper eyelid and go out slightly past your eye and taper off.
dont do the insides of your eyelids as this makes them look smaller and "piggyish".

The smokey look is not achieved by eye liner alone: eyeliner is exactly that it lines your eyes, for the outside you need a kohl pencil and then you need to blend it with smokey coloured eye shadow, use dark round the socket, a lighter one on the lid. The best tips i can give are these
1:understand your face colour tone and shape-a good book can help here
2. practise in private, yes you can look like a panda but why show everyone. I guarantee that those so called perfect have been practising in secret for hours!
3 get a good foundation- it gives a great uniform base to build the look on
4 cleanse tone and moisturise. If you want to keep a flawless look the best way is to start with healthy skin.
5 I really meant it about the good book try the library or any good book shop under health and beauty

Don't fully line the lid or you look just like you described. Try lining your top lid, just above the lashes, from the center out to the corner. Then use a dark grey eyeshadow with a fine eye brush to blend outward. Don't use too much or you'll end up looking like you've got a black eye! And maybe black/grey is too dark for you. Try a dark brown pencil and brown eyeshadow... that might look better on you and not so dark.

I have given up on eyeliner for the same reason!
I bought a Rimmel black eye shadow and i also have a silver and between them i can get my eyes to graduate from black thru to silver.
incidentally do you wear contacts, because i do and i'm always blaming them for my panda eyes!

its not eyeliner its eye definers you need and at least 3 shades of shadows. you have to build up the smokey look with colours and blending. You also need good tools for the job. EYE SHADOW BLENDER AND APPLICATOR virgin vie £9.25 its a must.

I use a "Merle Norman" shadow called 'Smoke', works great.
Looks wonderful, plus I do deepen it with a smudge of soft black
for the evening dark look.
good luck
