Because they don't want to get eaten. Moths rely on their camoflage and the fact that if they don't move, even a predator up close will not be able to see through their cunning disguise as a piece of bark sitting on your brightly coloured wall!

It's called camoflage, man! Also, moths are normally nocturnal; so they will remain "sitting still" until they feel safer in their surroundings; like night-time for example.

Yeah right. Also why do they come out at night and fly around your lights when there's a bloody great sun beaming light all day?!!!!
