an iflammed pancreas is caused by some type of infection and or a digestive problems. its sort of like when your spleen or your appendix swells and causes a boatload of problems. ive had the inflammed spleen and my stomach was hard as a brick. it was cased by an excess of bile in my system; bile being the green stuff from your gall bladder going bad. Your friends mom is really sick but the docs should be able to inject her with antibiotics and fluids and give her a full recovery. unless its been giving her problems for a while then there may be a larger problem lurking. if not, she should be good in about a week. another thing, she may be diabetic since the pancreas supplys the insulin to the body. try discoveryhealth.com.

Gallstones and alcohol abuse account for almost 80% of the hospital admissions for acute pancreatitis. About 1½ times as many women as men experience acute pancreatitis caused by gallstones.

Drinking as little as 2 ounces of alcohol a day (half a bottle of wine, four bottles of beer, or 5 ounces of liquor) for several years may cause the small ductules in the pancreas that drain into the pancreatic duct to clog, eventually causing acute pancreatitis. An attack of pancreatitis may be precipitated by an alcoholic binge or by an excessively large meal. Many other conditions can also cause acute pancreatitis.

Many drugs can irritate the pancreas. Usually, the inflammation resolves when the drugs are stopped.

Viruses can cause pancreatitis, which is usually short-lived.
