if it is a personal check, the bank is your only option
if it is a payroll check ( not handwritten) you can go to wal-mart, or many other large stores.

A lot of the retail and grocery stores will cash a payroll or teasury check for a minimum fee or they will cash it if you are purchasing something from them. There is usually a minimum purchase amount that you need in order for them to cash your check, but buying a pack of chewing gum with a $500 check won't get you anywhere.
Places like grocery store chains, Wal-Mart, maybe Eckerd's. Best thing to do is call around and see.

In NYC, there are numerous Check Cashing stores that require ID and other restrictions, for cashing your checks. They wont cash "personal" checks that you write yourself, or some individual writes to you (on their bank acct.). Basically they want to know who you are, and they dont take any risks they dont have to. They charge a small fee that doesnt amount to anything.
