It's a dietary and cultural difference. French diets include a lot of items you don't find in a typical american diet...and the human body does extrude a smell based on what you eat. Also, there are a lot of French smokers left, and that leaves a distasteful odor to many.
The important thing to note here is that it's not the french per se, though that's been an american favorite to pick out. Dietary differences are often the reason people say people of other nations or races smell odd.
BTW just a note - I lived in Europe for 11 years and visited France many times. The actually DO bathe regularly as a whole, with soap and everything.

I have actually heard people say that about many Europeans, and I don't get why they think that!
We're stationed in Italy, and we've been to France and just about every other European country to visit, and I don't think they smell any worse then some Americans do. It's like anywhere, you have your smelly people that need to take a bath and use deodorant, and then you have ones that smell just fine!

I really don't know. I never had smelled a French person. But, doesn't everyone smell bad when they don't take a bath?

Because they don't take showers.
They think the men with odor makes them more manly and they think their women are sexy with body hair.
