It shouldn't detract from your warranty. It also increases gas mileage, but only slightly. I have a cold air intake on my Mitsubishi Lancer and i like it a lot.
Cold air intakes move your air intake down below the engine (probably infront of your left front tire.) The intake is able to breath colder air, which condenses better in the engine. Thus, the motor will run slightly better, youll probably get a 5-15 hp power gain depennding on the quality of the intake/filter you get. Depending on your car, I'd recommend an AEM or Greddy Cold air intake.
One thing to be careful with: With the intake lower in your engine compartment, there is a chance that water could be sucked into the engine, you have to be careful not to hit deep puddles, turn off then engine in the carwash etc. Unless you get a nicer intake with built in water gaurd. Have fun.
