go into the common ports section, and choose your bittorrent client and router/modem and you'll get very good instructions with screenshots on how to setup your router/modem to allow the bittorrent client to connect smoothly to the internet.
also, you want to choose a *.torrent with alot of seeders in the first place so you've a decent chance of getting a reasonable starting download speed.
between these two factors you should be running at least to 90% of your potential download speed.

the only way to improve the download is for there to be more seeders so you could improve it for others by keeping it in your torrent downloader so others can download it from you too

You can't. Limewire sucks by the way.
It's a P2P (Peer to Peer) connection. So whatever they are giving you to upload (KBPS) from them, is what you get. Can't do anything about it but look for healthy torrents.
