My home was built in the 1960's. I have heard that it may not be safe to remove a popcorn ceiling because it may contain asbestos. Does this need to be done professionally?

you are correct it may contain asbestos you need to have it tested before you attempt to remove it and for safety sake have a pro remove it. Parents had a house built in 1975 ceiling popcorn had asbestos in it .

I have removed a lot of popcorn from ceilings. I would suggest wearing gloves, safety glasses, and a mask... I have not heard of there being asbestos in the actual popcorn. I know in the old ceiling tiles and insulation there was asbestos, but I think the popcorn is fairly safe inspite of the dust.

It depends what it's made of. You'll need to have it professionally tested to be certain. Safety aside, it's really a pain in the neck to remove a popcorn ceiling and have it look OK when it's done. I'd strongly recommend hiring a professional.

The "popcorn" ceilings are actually ground up plaster..most likely leftovers from doing the walls. They grind it up and shoot it up on the ceiling mixed with thinned down plaster. You can safely remove it. Take all necessary precautions,,gloves,,,,mask,,,overalls. It is not easy. You have to have your arms raised and they get tired "real" quick. Good Luck!!!

ask at your local lumberyard. They usually have an idea as to what was installed in the area and who to contact to send in a sample for checking.
