the other answers were good, but i am teaching here in GA.
i don't think i even got an option. my paycheck is based on 12 months. the only bad parts are a) when you start, you don't get a check for the first month and a half (you're paid AFTER the month ends, and since school starts in August......) and b)the month of december you get your check before christmas break, which is fine, but then you spend it all and don't get paid again until the END of january.

public school teachers DO NOT get paid in the summer, ANYWHERE. But they can sign up for a year around paycheck in many districts. What that means is they give you less money in your paychecks during the year, and save that money for you, and then return it to you as paychecks during the summer months.

But one problem is occurring quickly in most states. Most states are requiring teachers to work more work days in the year (ie: they make summer "shorter"). But because they are all broke, they don't pay teacher's any more money!!! And that's not FAIR. How would you like to work away half of your vacation weeks, and not get paid for them??? That's what is happening to teachers.

And by the way, teaching pays better than you may think. In Michigan, public school teachers with 10 years experience and Master's degree, which is pretty normal for teacher's to have, the pay is ON AVERAGE, about $67,000 per year. And that ain't bad.

You don't go into teaching for the money. You go in because you want to teach. No other reason will work. It is a VERY HARD, DIFFICULT, COMPLEX, and STRESSFUL job, more than nearly ANY job ANYWHERE. And many people cannot do it, no matter how hard they try.

You sure you wanna do this??? Or do you really think you can??? Did you know 1/2 of all new teachers QUIT teaching within 4 years, due to the reasons I said above. That is a true fact.

Do not go into teaching for the wrong reason, as you will never make it if you do. Seriously, I have seen several very strong, intelligent, well rounded people end up in mental institutions after just a short period of teaching. One could not even make it to Christmas vacation before she checked herself into a mental health hospital! She had to totally drop out of teaching, something she had worked hard for 5 years in college to get her teaching certificate, and in her first job, she lasted just 4 months. And she was a kindergarten teacher!!!!

I'm telling you the truth.

Think twice..... this is no easy job. And I can assure you of this: being a teacher just so you can get summer's off, if that is what you are thinking, is the worst reason I have ever heard to go into teaching. And it won't work. Cause you won't make it if that's your reason.

You'll see....

I teach in Illinois, and even though my pay is based on working 9 months, my pay is divided into 12 months of pay so that I still get a pay check in the summer.

I know a lot of teachers who get secondary jobs in the summer, and I know a few teachers who even have second jobs during the school year.

Hope this helps. Good luck pursuing your teaching career.
