I am going to get my 5 1/2 year old a new video game system for Christmas. What is the best for his age? Playstation, XBox, Gamecube etc...

Also, can the cd's be copied for backup. I see a potential problem with scratches on the cd's.

I would go with a gamecube. Nintendo is by far the most child friendly game system company around these days, and there are a ton of games that my own neice and nephew have adored on that system.

Pro's: by far the most durable game system of it's generation. Also the cheapest. 75% of the games on the system are kid friendly. The Wavebird controller is the first wireless controller to work really well and still one of the best. A lot of the game are at bargain bin prices as well, so you can find good new games from 20 - 40 bucks, less if you go used. The Gamecube discs, while small, are very hearty - I have never gotten a scratched one and my neice and nephew (now 5 and 8) have had theirs for three years and never been able to break one. Also, brand new systems can be found in multiple colors for $99 US.

Cons: No burning a copy of the disc is it does break; the CDs are a specialized size. If an adult wants to get one of the big three system mega-games (say, madden) they'll be getting the least impressive version. There's no online play...which is probably a pro for kids in the age group you mention.

Final thought: The PS2 is the most fragile of the three systems; literally one accident can break one (I know...I've had three and I'm thirty :S) The Xbox is very durable but has a huge focus on adult orientated games...not just the Playboy Mansion games, but bloody gorefests. My neice and nephew now have games on all three systems and play the gamecube almost exclusively..from the simple controller to the bright Nintendo cartoon graphics, it just draws them in.

Cons:

One, for a 5 year old, I would get him a play station 2 because it's the easiest system to understand. When he's older, then move on to a GameCube, followed by an XBox. And no, the CD's can't be copied, just bought twice.

I would prefer GameCube. It has more E-rated (or in other words G-rated) video games than PS2 or Xbox. PS2 and Xbox are most for teenagers and adults. As far as copying games, you need a special burner that will that certain format. They are really hard to find. It's something that you'll be able to find in stores. I heard that they're illegal.

Definitely gamecube. It's family based. But I don't know if you can copy the cds cuz they are smaller

X-Box, or X-Box 360....No doubt about it.

If you have a PC with a CD writer, you can possibly copy them.
