First, let me preface this. I love the series. But my Ex-s boyfriend let my 9 year old watch the whole series while he was with them. (We have 50/50 custody). I think it's way too grown up for a 9 year old. And of course my son is delighted he got to see it. I don't want my son not to tell me what's going on, but I don't know what my options are. So, what do you think?

I don't know, there the parts where people start bleeding from the eyes, the whole "whore" issue, and the reaver/torture stuff. And when River stabs Jayne with a knife. And when the bounty hunter threatens to rape Kaylee... etc.
My son is pretty smart, and somewhat worldly...but these are some pretty big issues.

I think there are worse things for a 9-yo to be exposed to. And I would think in a couple of years, he would be fine with it. But I think it is a little bit too strong for a 9-yo, and I wouldn't let mine watch it.

But it is water under the bridge now. Your best bet is to talk with your son about it. Get his impressions, and help him work through any of the confusion, difficulties or unpleasantness that he may have experienced in watching it.

Make this an opportunity for communication - it should work well that way.

Unfortunately, you will probably never be able to effectively proscribe, monitor, or influence activities for your son in your ex's household. But you can try to mitigate any potential damage. And communication between you and your son is the vehicle for that.

Good luck with it.

When I was 9 I was watching stuff way worse than that with my parents. I can only think of one or two scenes in the TV show that were a bit much for 9 y/o. One was a toture scene (not real graphic at all) and the companion chicks seemed to be fully clothed most of the time (it aired on FOX if I remember correctly and they seem to be very conservative with what they put on the air). Most of the adult humor is probably way over his head and to him it was probably a western version of Star Wars. I wouldn't worry too much,(all the cursing was in Japanese too) just inform the ex to not get any crazier than Firefly. As far as the killing (which isn't gory or graphic), that is up to you. Chances are your 9 y/o already knows more about death and killing than most 9 y/o's of the past. It is just the world we live in.

I think it would be fine. There are LOTS of worse things. Plus then your ex can explain the answers to his questions.

They don't really even cuss in that show.

It is up to you. I don't know what the series is about.
