I think you should wear what you would wear to an interview there. You never know when they are looking to fill a position quickly and may be impressed enough by your application to interview and hire you right away!

I have been in HR and the hiring process for around 7 years, during that period of time I have worked for several different companies. There has been a general consensus that going to pick up an application in jeans is not acceptable. First impressions are everything and jeans do not make a good first impression.

A rule that I have heard is dress as if you were going to work. If you are applying at Gap, then use their dress code as the attire you would wear to pick up an application and so on for each company.

Wear business casual. A nice pair of pants and a collerd shirt. Although this is not an interview the person who interviews you may remember the day you came in and picked up the application and if you were looking like a bum he may remember that and might think you don't take pride in your appearance and maybe you won't take pride in your work.

I worked as a professional for years.
I was told that you should wear a suit and tie,(I am a male), this is so that your employer could get a good idea of what you would look like as an executive, or if you were invited to a board meeting.
Dress for success.
If you are not going to rise above janitor, I guess overalls will do.

Better to dress up a bit than to show up in jeans. Like the interview, they may look at it as a reflection on you.

First impressions last. I went and applied at the new store in our city, but I wasn't confident. I didn't get the job, but I've learned from my mistake. Be confident and wear something no-one would get offended by. Good luck!

I would dress like the employees there dress -- i always recommend syping on where you want to work and dress like that -- then you look like you fit in before you even have to say a word.
