Did you reset it?

Usually after you change a battery you need to press the test button to reset it.

If that doesnt work maybe they are bad batteries.

Clean out the smoke detector air intake, clean the contacts on the detector where battery is inserted - making sure when you put the battery back in that it (1). is a new battery, fully charged, or (2) that you have the batter(y)ies in correctly.

If neither of this works, remove the detector and dispose of it properly with your county (it has radioactive isotopes in the sensor and is dangerous to the environment if just disposed with regular garbage).

A new First Alert battery costs anywhere from $19 to $49, depending on whether there is a carbon monoxide sensor and/or a light built into it.

Do it quick! Fire is so quick and often fatal!

Ours did the same crap, it drives us crazy. Its an elect one with a batt back up. Turns out that the batt does not "set" properly and when the smoke alarm "pings" to see if the battery is charged it does not realize that its there and DINGS every 20 secs or so....Pain in the ***. It ended up being only one bad unit that my dad replaced.

It's obviously defective- how can you trust it again?

You need to replace this detector. First of all , make sure the new battery is OK and that you have fitted it correctly. If the battery is OK, then replace the detector.

You have to replace the smoke detector. Home Depot and Lowes sell them for pretty cheap, and most come with a good warrenty.

If your in the UK, get in touch with local fire station because they`ll come out and fit new ones for free, with 10year batteries in them.

Try another NEW battery, then if it still bleeps get a new allarm. Or it could be a smoke allarm that requires a mains supply that has failed.
