is it something illegal or can you use it for legal substances as well? i'm just wondering because i just saw a picture of a girl that says she's never smoked pot but is smoking a hookah...so i'm confused. :D

Hookah bars are becoming quite trendy these days. A group of people can sit around the hookah and share a smoke ( flavored tobacco). In public settings, tobacco is the only legal thing that can be smoked in a hookah. Of course marijuana is illegal in most parts of the world, but often it is smoked in a hookah or other sort of bong.
If you are interested in hookahs, watch the Disney movie "Alice in Wonderland" and then decide what you think the caterpillar is smoking when he is discussing mushrooms with Alice.
As a side note: Many Eastern cultures use the hookah to smoke tobacco, much like the peace pipe, or other symbolic smoking rituals in various regions.

Well, I smoke hookah a few times a week. Hookahs are generally a social thing where you and your friends get together after a stressful day and smoke hookah. It's used with what's called shisha or hookah tobacco http://www.customhookahs.com/Hookah-Tobacco.aspx which is it's use for many people in the United States. I enjoy the hookah as it was designed for smoking flavored tobacco. The hooka does have a shisha bowl which is used to place the shisha in.
Some ignorant people may have in the past used to put other substances in there, but in general that is not what is intended for. For example, a heroin addict may use saringes to inject himself with heroin. The saringe is not designed for injecting heroin. It's designed to take a sample of blood for clinical use. It's designed for diabetic patients to inject their insulin for health purposes. It's unfortunate what a small few have used the hookah incorrectly. The hookah is used for smoking shisha and that is all.

Actually, tobacco smoked in a hookah pipe is very "tasty"---much cooler-smoking than in a regular pipe (FWIW, I've smoked conventional pipes for years and am considering getting a hookah for special occasions).
First tried a hookah at a "pirate-themed" weekend camp---200 adults, all being silly---at the "Sultan's Pleasure Palace"----they had disposable mouthpieces, so no worries about who'd been using the pipe beforehand. That, and some strong mint tea, made for a pleasant evening (plus watching a nice-looking slaveboy or two--wicked evil grin)....

Yes, it can be used for smoking just about anything, like mint, or my favorite hashish, which is a sort of flavored tobacco (not as bad for you as that found in cigarettes).

its not illegal yet but u can smoke anything in it like a bong but how our govnt is today it will probably be illegal like all the bull **** that is now
