I have had my tonsils removed as a child. I am struggling to swallow as my throat is so sore. It is extremely red and there are some white spots beside where my tonsils once were. Does anyone have any ideas what this is and how to cure? I have had it for 3 days and have taken throat sprays and lozenges which have not helped at all. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Having had a look around 1 possibility maybe Strep throat:-

Strep throat is most common in children between the ages of 5 and 15, although it can happen in younger children and adults. Children younger than 3 can get strep infections, but these usually don't affect the throat.

Strep throat is most common in the late fall, winter, and early spring. The infection is spread by person-to-person contact with nasal secretions or saliva, often among family or household members.

People with strep throat get sick 2–5 days after they are exposed. The illness usually begins suddenly, with a fever that peaks on the second day. Many also have sore throat, headache, stomachache, nausea, or chills.

In some people, strep throat is very mild, with only a few of these symptoms. In others, strep throat is severe. There are many strains of strep. Some strains produce toxins that can lead to a scarlet fever rash. This rash is thought to be an allergic reaction to the toxins. Untreated, strep throat can sometimes lead to rheumatic fever. Kidney complications are among the other possibilities.

You could be having 'pharyngitis', which only means infection of the throat. Looks like you have got a bad one and may need antibiotics. So check with a doctor. It is not a nice idea to stop eating because of the pain, as your system gets even weaker, the pain becomes worse and you take longer to recover. Take enough pain killers, 2 tablets(1 gm) of paracetamol four times and 400mg ibuprofen three times daily. Suspensions meant for kids may be easier to take. Try eating something half an hour after your painkillers, the pain should be at the lowest. Your doctor may prescribe you something like penicillin.
Make sure you are taking enough fluids. It may take around 7 days to recover fully, so take time time off! If you are that bad that you cant take medicines or cant swallow even your own saliva, you need hospital admission.

Another possibility if you are younger than 25, is a viral infection called glandular fever. The treatment would be the same.

Wish you a fast recovery!

The white spots indicate to me that you may have tonsillitis, although you have no tonsils, this is a classic sign of that infection. Methinks that you should see your GP and will probably need a course of antibiotics to clear it up. Salt water gargle is also very good for any sore throat as it soothes and is also antibacterial which may help with the condition as well as antibiotics.

It sounds very much like a sore throat to me :¬)

Get some antibiotics prescribed. If your throat feels too raw to swallow, then do the following. Inhale steam for about 5 minutes (bowl of boiling water on your lap, head down, large towel over you and the bowl) and then afterwards gargle in a solution of soluble aspirin. This will numb the pain and loosen up the passage to enable that capsule to get through.

Visit a doctor! You may have a throat infection, in which case, you'll need anti-biotics. Having your tonsils out may prevent tonsilitis, but not all throat infections! Hot lemon and honey drinks will help relieve the pain in the meantime, but do visit your GP!

You have a bad throat infection. Get anti bios from the doc. Having your tonsills removed means you don't get tonsillitus anymore but means you get far more throat infections as the tonsills are gone. Anti bios, lots of Vit C and zinc, ecinachea and lots of water. Good luck.

You have a group B strep infection.......Thats what the white dots are. Go to your doctor and get some antibiotics...even if it starts to feel better finish the whole course because having a strep infection can lead to organ complication if not treated.
All your doctor has to do is take a thoat swab and send to lab to confirm infection but will probably start you on antibiotics if they see the white dots.

Streptococcus infection. Probably. See your doctor for some antibiotics. You've probably got tonsilitis(yes you can still get it without tonsils). It'lll soon clear up with the right prescription.

The white spots make it sound like strep throat, go to the doctor you need antibiotics, strep may go away on it's own but can also spread and even damage your heart
