Because we, in the USA, live in the most affluent time to date, in our history.
We are a "Have" society. Gotta have it now......

70 or 80 years ago, not all families had a vehicle, only the father usually worked. There was no T.V., just radio, and not everyone had a radio.
Kids made a lot of their own toys, and played with the other kids in the neighborhood. Kids were kids then, not exposed to what the kids are in this day and age.
70 years ago the liberals had yet not opened free speech to include anything and everything.
We have been going downhill ever since.

Lack of imagination,
They are so used to having everything they ask for, that they don't know what to do, and often can't think of anything to do if left on their own.
This is the "yes dear" generation...Parents have forgotten how to say no to children (Like NO, you can't have a playstation (or Nike shoes, or a J.P. Gualtier sweater), we can't afford it...or NO you can't play with the playsation all day saturday, it isn't good for your eyesight, your mind, or your muscles).
Most kids have forgotten what it is to read a good book, take a walk (unless it's in a shopping mall), or ride a bike (good heavens Mom, it's too far...drive me there!).
We have created a generation of couch potatoes (I'm bored, there's nothing good on TV!)
Of Gimme Monsters (mom gimme some money to go shopping).
of Freedom Freaks...(at 15...I want to leave home so I can be free to do as I please, but please keep the money coming in folks!)
or the opposite
"Limpet Kids" (ex...My son is 38, and still living at home, he's too lazy to move out and do his own laundry!)

Lets give them more of what they really need (like love, discipline, education...and that is not necessarily schooling, but things like respect for their elders, sharing, and sometomes self-respect!), and less of the superfluous things they "think" they need, that end up in the trash, because a new model has come out!

They haven't had to do things on their own. When we were kids we had to find things to do without having compuers and video games. We try to buy all the fun things for kids now

Because they don't like learning. It is through learning that you grow as an individual. Self esteem is a by-product as well.
