The Mayan calendar doesn't end in 2012. The 12th Baktun of the Long Count ends in 2012. It's like our calendar going from 1999 to 2000, except that a Baktun is 396 years long. What happens then is an energy shift. Not the end of the world.

The Mayan calender works in time cycles. On December 24th 2012 ends a great cycle (I think it's 5000 years). The calender then repeats itself for a new cycle.
The Mayans were phenomenal astronomers. There calender is more exact than our Gregorian calender which is off by 1/4 of a day every 4 years, hence leap year. The Mayan calender was used for planting seasons, and acts of worship.
As for the end of the world, if such a thing happens on that date, it would be pure coincidence. Don't worry about it.

No. I don't think the Mayan calendar was counting down to the end of the world. I think it was counting down to an astronomical event. For example, our solar system orbits a central point in the milky way glaxy just like the Earth orbits the sun. Some people think that in 2012 our solar system will be at some kind of apogee in that orbit.

Well, actually, we can use history and Bible for this one. During the reformation period, everyone thought the world was going to end on the date 800. But did it? No, or else we would not be here.
When the world ends God will send his son, Jesus. It is his choice when the world ends, not the mayan calendar.

I'll just make up my own calendar that never ends. Who says only the Mayans are allowed to make up calendars? You do understand that calendars are just schedules made up by people so they can plant crops and go to work on the right days, right?

I have a Dog calendar from 2002 that ended on December 30 of that year. Does that mean that we are not really here?

Only one way to find out eh ?
To me it looks like a whole mob of pathetic brainwashed humans are trying to drag us headfirst into oblivion just to make some prophesy or other come true. The World will end for them of course !
I will guarantee that their masters will be dining on caviar swilled down with champagne at the same time as the poor buggers blood soaks into the sand.

This guy has done a history of doomsayers - all the idiots over history, right up to the present who have prophesised the end of the world, and lo and behold we are all still here.
What makes this idiocy about 2012 any different.

we as believers know this world would end one day,
the time is close as the last messenger of God (Mohammad) told us, but no one can tell exactly when, only God knows and decides it,
many of the signs of the end of the world has been seen,
live your life and do good and don't worry
