I think a regular old cell phone is too much responsibility for a 12 yr old to handle. My niece had one at 14 and had strange men calling leaving nasty messages, she used to cry to her mom about it so her mom got rid of it. Plus I'm 28 and have my cell connected to my Instant messanger and get all sorts of nasty messages. If you still want your child to have one then opt for the Migo (I think that's the verizon one) that only lets your child call up to 4 phone numbers as well as 911. You can even program in the numbers so the child can't just call anyone.

No, my son got one when he was 12. It was a prepaid phone and he did not use it to call friends etc... He used it to call home so I knew where he was. Also, when he was gone he was to have it on so I could call him. If it was not on or if he did not answer he was grounded.
He still has the same cell phone and uses it for the same purpose. It works out good for us.

Depends on your situation and whether you are responsible. My niece got a cell phone two months ago for her 11th birthday. She is responsible though and spends the night away from home on a regular basis. Her Mom and Dad bought it so they can reach her anytime they need to or if she needs them she can call them. It is also on a family plan where she shares their minutes.

Yes you could get one of those Verizon phones where they can only call a few numbers and it is a prepaid. Otherwise yes how would they pay the bill?!

Yes. It is ridiculus how much even adults blab on cellphones. Don't let him/her become a consumer whore so early in life, next thing you know he/she will be hanging out at Starbucks like the rest of the sheep.

No you can keep up with them. My daughter is eight and she has had her's for a year when she goes to beauty salon she can call when goes to the nail shop she can call and mainly when she goes to her Dad's for the weekend when the step-mother is mean she can call. so it works for us.
