The answer above is correct. But the letters stand for "Nil Per Os" or nothing by mouth. Usually it's ordered for a patient pending a procedure that requires you to have a clean gut (major surgeries, endoscopy, ultrasound of liver), or if you have some gut problem (infection, bleeding).

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular "fad" diets out there. Go here https://tinyurl.im/aHLtY

The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it's just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it's a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true

"daisylinx1" and "darren c" are correct when they indicate it's a Latin term for "nothing by mouth."

Latin is the language that medical professions -- physicians, nurses, pharmacists, etc. -- use to relay instructions, orders, prescriptions, etc., and the phrases/terms have become standardized and reduced to abbreviations.

Some other terms you may see -- especially on physicians' prescriptions filled by pharmacists -- are:

p.r.n. (pro re nata) meaning "as needed"
b.i.d. (bis in die) meaning "twice a day"
t.i.d. (ter in die) meaning "three times a day"
q.i.d. (quater in die) meaning "four times a day"
q.d. (quaque die) meaning "every day"

(The above terms indicate WHEN medications are given. Below are some terms that indicate HOW medications are given.)

PO (per os) meaning "by mouth"
PC (post cebum) meaning "with food" (or "after a meal")
SQ (also SC) = abbreviation for "subcutaneous."

So the next time you get a written prescription from your physician to take to a pharmacy for filling, see if you can determine what he's written. For instance, "100 mg, 1 q.d. PC, #30" means "100 mg tablets, take 1 every day with food, 30 tablets given."

(I impressed my physician when I started speaking "his" language at him. Ha! lol.)
