Ok, I have a computer in my house that won't run anything off of a USB drive. When I plug my zip drive in it says, "A high speed flash drive is in a low speed port." And that it may not be able to recognize it. For other USB run things it simply says nothing when plugged in.

Do I need a converter or something??

Thanks.

I love how everyone is always like "go buy something to fix your problem." Must be nice to be rich, eh?

If they're not recognizing anything (printers, cameras, flashdrives, etc.) there is a conflict somewhere - that's not normal. Here's what to do.

Right click on your my computer icon (either on your desktop or in the start menu) and choose properties. When the dialog box pops up, click on the hardware tab and choose "device manager." (Located near middle of page).

Look at the list of hardware listed in that location. You're looking for "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Open by clicking on the + sign next to that icon, and my bet is that there are either a bunch of Yellow Exclamation points, or absolutely none at all. Either way, you'll want to right click everything listed under this "USB Controllers" heading and choose to uninstall them.

When you have them all removed from your system, restart.

During the restart, the hardware configuration wizard is going to show up. Let it run its business - it's finding your USB devices and installing drivers for them.

Chances are, about 95% of the time, this will solve your problem.

The other 5 percent of the time, the device that you are pluggin in (ie. a printer or a camera or something) is not turned on when you plug it in. Make sure that these things are turned on prior to plugging in the USB Cable.

If its a flashdrive, it should simply recognize it once the devices are reinstalled through this process.

Good luck -

Rob

Look at your Windows device manager and check to see if your USB hubs were correctly detected. You'll see a yellow question mark if they're not. You may need to install the drivers that came with your motherboard or USB PCI card.

It looks like you have USB 1.1 ports and you're trying to run high-speed USB 2.0 devices. If you devices are not 1.1 compliant, they will only work if you have a USB 2.0 connection.

The easiest solution is to buy a USB 2.0 PCI card and install it in your PC (with the drivers). This should make it work.

if it says high speed flash drive is in low speed port, it will still work. you do have the option to make the port high speed, but transfers happen at low speed too. for other things, you should probably remove the port and reboot...
