yah know, it's always been that way. philippines has had a misconstrued image of being a haven of hookers and whore... and for that, the country suffers. it's common knowledge. look, when someone mentions, "i'll be flying to las vegas"... the connotation is commonly viewed as i'll be gambling there. or if i say, i'll be going to paris, pr rome, or china, or japan.... the initial impression would be of things happened or identified with the places. though it's a misleading information, it hurts to know that your place or locality be branded that way. but it has alreadt been imprinted on their minds, so prove them wrong otherwise. visit the place, and tell them once you get back, that they're impression has been wrong all along. that all ideas about any place is far-fetched... the best way then is to go ahead and venture with your plans and see the underlying truth....i'm a filipino, and it hurts to know that this is a foreigners impression of my country.... thus i challenge them, come out and visit us and discover the beauty of the philippines....

"MABUHAY....Welcome to the Philippines"...

I have been to the Phils numerous times over the past 5 years and the only thing's I "caught" were stupid infections in cuts and the like. I cut the back of my hand getting off a jeepney one time and within 2 hours I had a nasty infection, but a quick stop to the drug store fixed it in about 2 days. I got a cut on my knee getting into a trike one time and the same thing happened, within about 2 hours INFECTION, but the same medicine (salve) fixed it quickly. I have never gotten an STD while I was there, but then I am ALWAYS careful. Just dont drink the tap water and brush your teeth with bottled water and keep your mouth closed when showering....you will be fine. Sometimes foreigners hear a little news blurb and decide it is fact about this place......best advice ASK YOUR DOCTOR before you leave. They are up to date on all health isssues abroad. Enjoy you trip and don't worry so much.

The reson you get those type of responses is there are a bunch of ignorant people that have never visited the Philippines only hear "stories" from old men comming here on sex tours.

There are quite a few Expats living here in the Philippines like myself that have met and married beautiful Philippine women through mutual friends. We know that this negitive perception of the Philippines comes from ignorant people that have never evan visited here. If they had visited evan once, they know that that kind of talk is complete nonsence.

For a first time visitor here I would recommend going to Boracay Island. After you've seen just a small part of the Philippines I know you'll agree that this Philippines is one of the nices places in the world to visit.

I'm Filipina, and they say that because it's true.

STDs and AIDS are a big problem because the Philippines is a conservative Roman Catholic country where it's taboo to talk openly about sex. Many people don't even know what a condom is, and many don't know what STDs or AIDS are.

Just like in Thailand or Vietnam, a lot of filthy men fly there for cheap sex, because the girls are so filthy poor, they're desperate for a buck, literally a buck, a US dollar.

It's also very dangerous there, EVERYWHERE, so be careful.

Also, Filipinos will smile to your face, but talk sh__t about you behind your back, so I wouldn't trust so much, because the face they put on in public is different than their face in private.

It's probably because most of the foreign tourists who go the Philippines and are single males (even not the single ones) go there to have a good time as, sad to say, the sex industry there is cheap (which I hope someday the government as well as the rest of the country will do something about... maybe when we've matured more as a people and nation...bah!!! talking to myself again). In any case if you are going there and have an interest in the beaches, try visiting Boracay or Siargao (for surfing), go to the islands of Bohol, Cebu and Palawan (good diving spots)... Manila is too overcrowded for my place, its like New York and its bustling traffic if you would like to visit the Luzon area though try going to Vigan, Baguio, Tagaytay....

Black herpes/syphilis??? I get the STD part, but i have never heard of colored STD's. What's up with that.

Anyway, you pay too much attention to people egging you on. If you really want to have fun, ignore the bastards and have the time of your life. The Philippines isn't all about partying, there are so many sights to see and places to go. Yes, a lot of areas aren't very pretty, but if you know where to go it will take your breath away.

Well, just be very careful. Once your here, just take care of your belongings. If you were able to find someone to guide that will be nice. If not yet, I can guide you then.
But then be sure to make hotel reservation 2 or 3 months before coming here. And if you want a safer hotel, stay at the University of the Philippines Hotel.
Have a nice trip and hope you will enjoy your stay here. Ingat.

I'm from the Philippines. I can't understand where did they got the idea. Even if you get a hooker here there is a small chance that you will get a STD compared to other popular tourist destination here in Asia. Personal hygiene is quite important here.

I assure you, you will going to love our beaches, nightlife, shopping and the hospitality of the Filipinos. And the most important thing is most Filipinos speak English.

it seems obvious that though you are saying you wont hire hookers, other people percieve the other way around. I think they believe that YOU WILL GET ONE so they are giving you warning. I think they have known you to be a pervert.

there are syphilis everywhere, not just in the Philippines. it is the subject (you) who will decide whether to get one or not
so this issue does not have something to do with the Philippines, this is more of a "perception issue"..people's perception about u that is..

I didn't know STD's came in colors. Globally, if you are going to pick up hookers then use protection. I think they say that because being a foreigner here you will automatically be solicited by prostitutes.
