I learned how to play guitar 100% on my own. All I did was ask the guy at the guitar shop some basic questions and the rest is simply history.
But if I had to go back and learn guitar again I'd say defintely get lessons. I'd say first start out with an acoustic guitar and get used to all the basic chords, chord progressions and the rest of the basics. A good teacher of lessons will teach you all of this.
If you want to go with electric right off the bat (I did this myself) it's pretty easy. Just fool around with the guitar (BUT NOT THE TUNING!!) and see what you can come up with.
Speaking of tuning, only tune the guitar yourself only once you know how to get it back to the way it was. You can mess up the whole guitar or even break the strings/bridge if it's a cheap acoustic guitar.
If you have any further questions that I didn't answer here send me a message via my profile page, I taught myself how to play guitar and now I can learn a whole bunch of songs by ear along with sheet music.

Above about a book is a good start. Many people have learned using the "Mel Bay" books, I think that the correct name. He has good illustrations of Finger and Hand placement to get you off to a good start. Then as your fingers toughen up and you know some chords and notes, you may want to get an instructor just depends on how far you want to go. Get a good Guitar and an electronic tuner if you can not tune by ear. Nothing will kill you quicker than a hard to play out of tune Guitar. Acoustics: Yamaha, Washburn and Fender make some real nice ones for under $200. I bought a Washburn for $100 the other day and there was a nice Fender for the same price, New and Tuned and even got a few free picks! :-D

It depend if you're serious or not. Getting a guitar to make beautiful noises takes A LOT of practice and dedication. Don't think that you can pick one up and miraculously sound like a legend. First, go to a music shop and look for a cheap ($100-$200) guitar. The best way to start is to have a friend that plays who is patient enough to sit down with you and show you the basics. If you don't know anyone, there are books for beginners. Good Luck!

First get a guitar you can use, then an illustrated book of chords. There are lots of places for lessons online, also! My sons both learned this way. Then practice, practice, practice!!
