I towed a car from my (paid for) reserved parking space, then it got tore up. The day it happened turned on the engine the light came on and I heard rattling/knocking sounds. Anyone have thoughts to what could be the prob. and/or the least expensive way to repair?

Check the exhaust pipe! Sometimes ppl put things in there and it makes your car sound like hell! Plus it can be lethal if it gets completely blocked (ie sending carbon monoxide back into the car). I sure hope you called the police. People can be real animals sometimes.

If I understand, you had a car towed then yours was vandalized. If that is so, do not run the engine any more. Check the oil level, if the oil was dropped and the plug replaced you might be hearing the rods knocking because of no oil. If the oil is in there, change it and have it analyzed, there are companies that will do that for a reasonable price (AOA is one, check the internet) if nothing comes back on the analysis, and it may take a few days, you know the engine should be OK. But if it comes back indicating bearings or other metals are in the oil you will need to have a mechanic look at it.

It's hard to imagine that the inside of the motor can be vandalized to produce rattling/knocking sounds. Maybe it's your fan blades that got bent and are hitting the radiator. Are all your spark plug wires connectec to the distributor cap? That would be a simple fix, just reconnect the ones that are loose. I don't see how it could be valves or piston rods unless somebody took a sledge hammer to your engine. I wouldn't take any chances though in driving it. The least expenisve way to repair really depends on what the problem is. I don't have a lot to go by here. A mechanic that you trust would be the least expensive way to repair your car.

Check your gas cap to make sure it is there and/or tight. A missing or loose cap can cause the engine light to come on. The knocking.....where is it coming from and when?? Pretty much need more info. like what kind of car it is and when you hear the rattling and knocking noise. Is it when the car is moving, is it an engine noise, suspension noise, brake noise. Does it only make noise when you hit a bump, turn a corner, apply the brakes or simply when the engine is running. Could it be exhause pipe rattle noises?? The list of questions can go on.

If your paying for reserved parking and you towed a car was it your car or someone elses who parked in your place? Regarless, do not drive the car, engine light means " take me to the car doctor". Rattling/knocking does not sound good. It needs to have a look see under the hood. Best of luck w/all that.

well, its sounds like they have let the oil out of the engine, or the next idea that i have heard of is putting sugar in the gas tank, that would also cause ur engine light to come on! Take the car to a mechanic, let them mess with it to be sure

Somebody put sugar in your gas tank.
This is expensive to repair, although your insurance company should pay for some of the repairs under vandalism.
Good luck ,and get yourself a locking gas cap.

sounds like somebody poured sugar in your gas tank. don't start the engine! get it to a mechanic right away. they may have to drain the tank and flush the fuel system. if you continue to drive it, the repairs could be in the thousands.good luck! by the way, who did you piss off?

Did they drain your oil?

Maybe they put something foreign in your intake plenum and its resting on valves or in one of your cylinders? (like a bolt?)

No matter what it doesnt sound good. Where does it sound like the knocking/rattling is coming from?
