factor: a number that is being multiplied with another number. That is, if you have the expression a*b, a and b are both factors of the number a*b, which is the product. This also applies to other expressions such as polynomials or matrices; anything that can be multiplied. For example, x^2-1=(x+1)(x-1); we say that x+1 and x-1 are the factors of x^2-1.

Independent events: two events A and B are independent if P(A and B)=P(A)P(B). The outcomes of independent events do not depend on one another.

Dependent events: events that are not independent. Example: Suppose A is the event of flipping a coin and having it turn up heads, and B is the event that the coin is flipped 3 times and it comes up heads at least once. Events A and B are dependent, because the outcome of B depends on the outcome of A. Also, p(A)=1/2 and p(B)=7/8, but p(A and B)=1/2.

Standard notation: as opposed to scientific notation, for writing numbers. For example, if you have the number 567.402, that is standard notation, but in scientific notation, it's 5.67402 x 10^2.

Your math book should have a glossary

A factor is something that goes into something else evenly. 5 is a factor of 95

Independent events have nothing to do with one another. Dependent events do. If you are throwing a die and spinning a spinner, they are independent. If you draw a card from a deck and DO NOT PUT IT BACK before drawing another card, the second event is dependent on the first.

Standard notation in just the number
