something also to think about is that in the past the only people you could force to stand up and be measured were Men in prison, people generally of poorer background poorer diet and poorer general health.
Lt. Hardy on board HMS Victory was the tallest man on the ship at 6'7" I have been below decks there and seen where Nelson died, Hardy apparently spent much time by his side as he died, I am only 5'11" and i smashed my head under there about ten times. I think general health is making us grow to our full potential, but also the fact that people are more willing to take part in census' (not sure of the plural for census) means we have a more wide ranging take with people from all backgrounds.

Most scientists say that it is because our diet and health are better each successive generation. Since asians began eating a more westernized diet they too have been getting taller each successive generation too. so diet may indeed be the key.

actually that's not true, if you consider children, look around a local middle/junior high school; the children look between 6 and 10 years old, and at the elementary schools, the older children look as if they belong in Kindergarten, but I believe it was true for teenagers and young adults starting in the 90's

Yes, definitely true. Just go into old buildings and see how low the ceilings and doors were. I'm thinking it's all the chemicals in our body, all the hormones in our milk and meat, etc.
