Due to lack of rain and extreme heat ( Texas.. many 100+ deg. days). What should I do to ensure my grass comes back strong next year. I have St. Augustine grass.

I think that the fall is a good time to take care of 'brown grass'. Even in Pacific Northwest, a lot of people let grass go brown and crunchy, since we won't get too much rain and also to save water. They won't die completely anyway, my front yard looks like a wheat field. When the weather is cooler and moisture is started to come back, it's a good time to make your grass come back to life by watering, aerating and re-seeding. By next spring, your grass will be all green and fresh.

I too have St Augustine grass (floratam & palmetto) and it is entirely possible that it will not come back. Water as frequently as the law allows and see what appears. If only weeds come back start over next spring. St Augustine needs regular water. Check with a local nursery to see what they might suggest as less demanding for your area. Check with your local agent but we put on a winterizer 15-0-15. If you fertilize be careful what you use as it could do further damage.

It will be going dormant soon anyway. If you get enough rain it will come back. Ours here in southern Iowa had browned out earlier this year and then we got rain, within a short time it came back and started to look real good. Now even though it is cooler it is starting to brown again since we have not had much rain in the last month.

Sure it will...grass doesn't really die so much as it goes dormant to kind of save itself. Give it a good fertilizing and wait for spring.
