I need a book that will tell me what certain things symbolize. I am writing a few pieces for a writing class, and it would be helpful to know what certain words symbolize. For instance, rain, black mascara, and many other things. Is there a book like that? If so, PLEASE let me know!!!

I think the symbolism lies with the author. For example, rain can be a symbol of cleansing, regeneration, life trials, or anything else the author chooses for it to mean. It can also mean just the state of the weather, too.

Black mascara? Again, black has a lot of different symbolic uses: sin, dreams, the night (rest, endings), mourning, elegance (black was the color long worn at the Spanish court, and was a favorite color of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second
wife), moodiness--just to name a few. Mascara could be used to symbolize falsity (it enhances the eyelashes), as part of a character's image as Gothic, or an attempt to improve or change one's outward appearance.

Good luck on your writing assignments.

Ah - you seek the wisdom of individual authors and books. Each sees differently and writes accordingly. Black is night is beautiful is nothing is all.
