This cable will not plug into any phone jack, it is just a little larger size called RJ45.
If you want to created a home network, and NOT use a hub or router, you can get RJ45 "crossover" cable. Best place to get that is Radio Shack, because they KNOW what you mean. Crossover cables connect two computers directy. Dont' forget to map the drives.
If you just want to connect YOUR computer to the modem, then regular RJ45 cable is fine. You can get that in different lengths 15 ft, 25 ft., 50 ft. at Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, or other store that carries personal computer hardware.
If you want to connect more than one home personal comuter to the modem then you need a regular RJ45 that runs from the modem to a router port. You may connect as many pc's as you have ports to accommodate them.
Then you'll need, one for each computer, an RJ45 cable to run from the router to each computer.
I would like to suggest you buy at least 25 feet for ease in positioning your pc, and running the cable around the edge of the wall out of the way.
Look on the back of your computer. More modern computers have an RJ45 port in the back at a different place than where a phone line would plug in.
because...
If your computer is older, and you don't see an RJ45 port, then you may have to purchase a NIC card (very cheap on ebay) a $15.oo will do fine. This card goes into your tower, it will slip into a slot on the motherboard, and then, after you do that, and close the case, you can plug your cable into the NIC card. It is easy, but if you've never been inside your pc case, you might want to get a computer-wise person to instruct you. Remember, when you go inside your computer, that "static" electricity is BAD, so be CERTAIN to gound yourself (touch metal), before touching anything in there.
If you have extra USB ports on the back of the computer, you may be able to purchase a cable with one end RJ45 and the other end USB connector.
Enjoy!

If the cord is going from your modem to your PC you are going to need an Ethernet cable. Go to Circuit City, Best Buy, or Office Depot... or any other store that has computers and computer related items and as for one, they will show you what they have. They may come in different lengths, or you may have to measure how much you need a go to a local computer store to get that measurement of ethernet cable. The charge should be minimal.

Go to your area's computer shop and tell them what you need to do and I'm sure they will know how to help you. Or call the people that you god the modem from and ask them to send you one. Your DSL modem should come with the correct cord to begin with.

It is a Catagory5 Ethernet Cable. You can get them at electronic stores or places like walmat. Usually run you about $1.00 a foot for the cable. If you look at the end of the cable, you will see that is it about an 1/8 of an inch wider then a phone cord jack, and has eight little wires inside it. A phone line as (at most) six wires.

There is a REAL difference...
From the comp. to the modem(router)- It can be as long as you like. (Ethernet Cable)
From the Router to the wall jack- They want this to be as short as possible (Regular phone cord)
Try not to have ANY other electrical devices near the modem/router...
Happy Browsing......

from the modem to the computer should be an ethernet cable which is different than a phone chord. you can find them at any hardware/computer store. or if you give me a measurement and your address, i can make you one and send it to you.
