I have two cats. They are 5 and 8 and I have adopted them recently. We started with a litter tray indoors but encouraged them to use the cat flap and go outside by moving the litter tray outside. One cat used the litter tray but the other was sporadic and would poo indoors. I gave up and got a second litter tray indoors. Both cats now use the tray indoors but one has started to poo outside the box again.

Help!!!!!!

I had this trouble with adopted cats. They were extremely stressed because of their move and also, my neighbour's cat was used to dropping in whenever he felt like it (and we'd welcomed him before my two arrived). We had to stop the neighbour's cat coming in, then after a while, my two were no longer insecure and stopped weeing and pooing indoors. The vet said it had been because they were marking their territory, even though they were neutered males. Is your cat stressed for any reason you can think of?

Firstly, if the litter tray is near the cats' food, move it. They don't like messing near food. Keep a clean tray, but not too clean, at least until they are both using it - the smell encourages them to use it. Don't worry, it doesn't need to smell enough for you to notice it! Just don't use stuff like disinfectant on it.

Next, it is worth trying a covered litter box, as some cats feel vunerable using a tray. Then, if the one cat keeps messing in one particular place, clean carefully and rub with lemon - do NOT use a cleaning product with ammonia in it, as the cat will just try and cover up the smell by messing there again. Then, after cleaning, put their food there, at least until the litter box is being used correctly. They will never mess near their food. Good luck!

you may need to use 2 litter boxes because cats are excepnally clean and do not care to share a litter box unless the come from the same litter are were brought up to share one!

Cats know to use litter boxes from birth. If one cat isn't using its litter box you need to hire someone to re-train it.

You haven't mentioned it but have you changed the cat litter?
My cat poo'd all over the house when we changed his litter brand.
