Ixtapa is a place created for tourists. It's hotels could be in Hawai'i or Miami. If you have no interest in Mexican culture and are just looking for sand and sun, then it's fine. If that's where your staying, Zihuatanejo is very close.

Zihuatanejo gets a fair of tourists, but it's a real place with a Mexican feeling and a favorite of many who know Mexico well.

I live in Ixtapa and find it to be a paradise. There is an 8 km bike track that starts at the Marina, goes through an ecological park (Aztlán) and ends in the crocodile reserve in Playa Linda. You can take a boat there to go to the Isla Ixtapa and go for snorkeling. Get back to the Zona Dorada and enjoy your meals there. I can recommend you my favorite restaurants:

1. Villas de la Selva - Overlooking the Ixtapa bay. Expensive, excellent food and service. Go there at sunset.
2. Ruben´s - delicious hamburgers right in the shopping area in front of the hotels.
3. Toscana - a little Italian restaurant besides Ruben´s. Fresh food from Tuscany, very clean, reasonable prices.

Ixtapa is a very clean place and it has beautiful gardens, two golf courses, the marina, the El Palmar beach with soft, golden sand.

Take a local bus to Zihuatanejo for a day and go to the market, visit the port, walk around the picturesque streets.

Enjoy Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and if you need accommodation, try the Villas Paraiso hotel, a 3 star hotel with suites.

In Ixtapa, you have the real "tourist area" big hotels, great beaches, shopping malls, etc. In Zihuatanejo, about a 15 minute taxi or bus ride, its the older section of the fishing town. It is much more "colorful" and much more "Mexican" (although still pretty "touristical")

The beach front restaurants in Zihuatanejo are fun to eat at. There is a good nightlife between the two towns, whatever you fancy.

If you want a simply superb hamburger, check out "Ruben's" in Ixtapa, comes with an interesting surprise.......

Go to the Marina, there are several restaurants that you can go to that are excellent, one of my favorites is Bucanero's.

If you are in the mood for an excellent burger go to Ruben's (be sure to ask for the Original Rubens Burguers as there are lots of imitators) and order a burger and oven baked potatoes...they are the best!

The Pizzeria near Ruben's is also great, and it has a gorgeous terrace where you can have dinner too.
There are a lot of shops in front of the Hotels, but if you want to buy mexican style crafts you should go to the arts market or to Zihuatanejo's market, they have less tourists there and more goodies.

For nightlife I recommend "La Valentina" or if you are into the typical tourist place go to Carlos and Charlies, there are some nice shops around there too.

If you have the time and want to have a romantic dinner go to "Casa de la Selva" or to "La Casa que Canta" the second one is the Hotel where Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan filmed some scenes for "When a Man loves a Woman".

The Westin hotel's bar is the best place to catch the sunset, it has a huge terrace and you can have drinks and enjoy the scenery.

You can ride motorbikes or bycicles, Ixtapa has a great bycicle and skate circuit, plus you can always rent a kayak at the beach.

Be sure to ask the locals to take you to "La Isla", it's a short trip by boat to a small island near Ixtapa where the best seafood is cooked mexican style, and it is a great place for water sports.

Good luck on your trip!

I love Ixtapa and Ziha. Beaches and sun. Lots of great food at reasonable prices. Friendly people. Theres a small island you can visit and spend the day right off the coast. Ziha is good for a real Mexican feel with lots of small shops. Horseback riding on the beach is fun and Cheap if don't book it through the hotel. Just go to the beach and people will meet you and you can get a guided tour for around $20 for an hour or so.
