We're often seen as arrogant, pushy, violent, and shallow.
In reality, we're just like any other place--you'll find some people who are kind, generous, understanding, and loving, just as you'll find others who think only of themselves and think only of how they can use others to their own advantage.
In a word, we're human.

---I think it depends on the country, culture, and time. During WW II, I have read the English thought there were 3 things wrong with Americans: We were overpaid, oversexed, and over there. Some countries and cultures think America is a nation of mechanics, always bending over the open hood of our cars, working on them. I, an American, take that as a complement, and see it as a requirement for living in a modern, high-tech society, but those in some cultures are proud of never getting their hands dirty. Perhaps because of TV, some see the U.S. as a nation of men carrying high powered handguns, sexy women in revealing dresses, and every street lined with palm trees. The latter is true of Los Angeles, California --Hollywood-- where many TV shows, and movies, are made. I have heard the Japanese think Americans are inefficient; even our deadly snake bites take a half-hour to kill you, instead of their 2-steps or 3-steps. ---Jim

One stereotype I run into is that many people seem to think everybody in the U.S. is rich; others are that Americans are uncultured, arrogant, or ill-educated. Being stereotypes, they are of course not especially valid ideas, but those are some of the ones that I've encountered.

Being Canadian we always heard several stereotypes about Americans.
1) Loud
2) Rude
3) Pretentious
4) Gun happy
I work with tourists so I know none of these are true, for the most part. ; )

coming here from another country, I brought along some stereotypes: that Americans are arrogant (not so true), rich (yes, the majority of poor people here qualify as middle class in my country), uneducated (60% of college students are immigrants or children of immigrants), oblivious to the rest of the world (true, most Americans don't even know where other countries are in the world), easy going (true), obsessed (with dieting, diseases, exercising, lawsuits, decorating, tobacco companies, etc.), bigger (bigger bodies, bigger cars, bigger houses, bigger dreams), free (not so true).
