Different guitars are for different things.

Best Production Lead Guitar: Fender Stratocaster.

Best Production Rhythm Guitar: Any of the Rickenbackers.

Best Custom job: Prince used to play a white guitar with unbelieveable sustain, because the body had an arm that extended to the top of the neck.

Anything you can customize yourself. Not to many manufacturers allow you to tell them what you want. ESP Custom shop allows you to do anything you want. You can give them the body shape, any colour, any wood, anything. You make the ultimate guitar. There isn't a true ultimate guitar but rare gems like the 1950's Gibson explorers and Flying V's are rare beauties.

You are just going to get a load of people bumming about how cool their own guitars are.

If by ultimate you mean the best made, most electronically complicated one, I would suggest one of Jerry Garcia's monstrosities would fit the bill.

Its a meaningless question though. Music is an art form so there is no 'ultimate" anything.

The ultimate guitar is, without a doubt, Derek Bailey's 19-string-er.

No further comments required. ('nuff said?)

i think there's no ultimate guitar thing, it is a matter of preference and what kind of music you play, a Les Paul, an Ibanez gem, a Fender strat, etc... for a guitarist it is the kind of music he is expressing thru his guitar, it is an extension of who he is, his music gets thru to his listeners thru his instrument and i think even if he plays a peavey, a jackson, aria, yamaha if his music sounds great thru those guitars, i guess thats the ultimate guitar...

In my opinion. It's my 1942 Airliner, with humbucker pick ups, and Dean Markley strings. It has a very heavy body that gives awesome tone and sustain. The body and the Humbuckers, work together, to deliver a full bodied sound. Then again that's just my opinion.
See EASY.
