Here's a good example: The saga of Bishop Terry Hornbuckle and Agape Christian Fellowship. Hornbuckle, recently convicted of rape and drug charges, had the full devotion of his entire congregation despite the fact that his true nature was obvious to anyone who cared to know the truth. He was a prosperity preacher, who taught that faith was the path to riches and seemed to prove it by dressing nicely and driving expensive cars. His congregation was so anxious to believe in his message that they were blind to the reality of who he was, even to the extent that they endangered themselves and their family members. Many of his congregation still stand by him. The same pattern can be found in the congregations of televangelists such as Robert Tilton, and in the relationship of many groups, throughout history, to poor leaders. It's an overworked example, but the same dynamics were at work during Hitler's rise to power.

complicated to declare yet i could could say theists are. there is not any stay overall performance info of this god different than the bible--in case you desire to call the bible stay overall performance info. Yeah listening to people say confident he's genuine seem around you.. Ah! it is termed nature. If he replaced into genuine and performed a majority of those miracles alongside with partin the the pink sea or turning a loaf of bread to feed hundred of folk why is he no longer doing that now??? OH precise the so referred to as tale of activity. I basically think of that each and every time an Atheist factors out a flaw theists continually attempt to apply the bible or some thing else to purpose and tutor that god is genuine yet in the tip the reality is god isn't genuine edit: humorous how maximum theists use the bible as sole info of the existence of god

Self deceit is a misnomer as there is not a unique self. Our behavior results from one of many competing interests in our brains taking charge. When other parts of the brain get back in the driver's seat they will ask themselves how they could possibly have behaved as they did. Before sex with a new partner men are driven by lust. After release lust recedes and the intellect takes over and asks itself how it could possibly have allowed you to sleep with that woman. Shakespeare calls it an expense of spirit in a waste of shame, which pretty much sums up for me the phenomenon of self deceit.

As to finding examples, take the structure I have given you and apply it to any case that interests you. Look for signs of internal conflict, usually between appetites and duties.

I can give you two absolutely universal examples and one nearly universal example of human self-deception.

1. Everyone in the world thinks they are unique and unlike other people.

2. Everyone in the world thinks that everyone in the world thinks just like they do and is just like them.

3. Most people think they are immortal.

When we reach around 50-years-old and look at ourselves in the mirror - we don't see the same person that others see. Our mind plays tricks and we see ourselves as we were maybe 10 years ago. We fool ourselves.

Unfortunately, sometimes we get a glimpse of ourselves unexpectedly, and then we see the real "me" and it usually comes as a big shock.

This happened to me recently (I am now 64)
I was walking through a restaurant and happened to glance to my left.
I saw someone who resembled my father (long since gone) and then realised it was me in a full length mirror!

Ouch!

People drive SUVs with Sierra Club stickers and complain about the price of oil.
People worry about their finances but drink $5 cups of Starbucks Coffee.
So many "vegetarians" eat fish, poultry & dairy, that they had to come up with the word "vegan" to describe those that don't.
Foley sponsored an internet predator bill.
I could go on an on....

I have the perfect example. When someone says they are a nice person. Usually the ones that think they are nice are usually not. I know a guy who says he is nice he just gives people constructive criticism. Example you are fat you need to go on a diet. Etc...

There are a number of ways people self-deceive themselves.

The most common way is by projection. That is, by blaming others for what one experiences within oneself. "you make me mad"; "you hurt my feelings"; "you made me cry"; etc.

Every psychologist who says that he knows what the MIND is, is self-delusional in his belief. The MIND is a subtle vibrational energy simultaneously existing with the physical brain, but not perceivable by the brain. It is, of course, not the brain.

When one denies being angry, fearful, sad, etc., the person is being deceived by his/her own MIND, and thus self-deceiving.

Every atheist is self-deceiving him/herself because he/she cannot prove what he/she believes.

Every smoker, or heavy alcohol drinker is self-deceiving / rationalizing to continue their habit.

Peace
