It is a strong possibility that the draft could make a reappearance after the election no matter who is in the majority, Bush has the service people spread to thin. They are now making people stay in Iraq as much as 18 months because of there are not enough body's to go around. All this for a war that is becoming less and less popular here. I think if they do start up the draft that you will see Americans in the streets, shades of the protest of the American involvement in Vietnam.

The all-volunteer military of the US has produced the most professional, well-trained, and dedicated fighting force that the world has ever seen. Why would anyone want to incorporate a bunch of losers who have no desire to serve and who are in no physical shape to operate as a soldier?
The present military size is adequate. It certainly isn't too big, and might be a bit too small, especially considering it is US doctrine to effectively manage 2 large conflicts at a single time. We are doing 1 and a half right now, and it is stretching us, but certainly nowhere near breaking us.
Adding conscripts to our present fighting force would damage morale, reduce our effectiveness, and create a weaker fighting force.
Put it this way: If you take a company of 100 trained, volunteer infantry soldiers, and add 20 untrained, green conscripts who don't want to be infantry soldiers, you haven't increased the effectiveness of that unit by 20%. In reality, those 20 weak soldiers are going to be a drag on the 100 good soldiers, causing the overall unit to decrease in combat readiness.

And for what war would this draft be instituted? Re-enlistment is at something like 110% of goal for all armed forces. They don't need a draft unless we start losing soldiers by the thousands, which isn't going to happen.

The draft is not coming back. They used this threat during the last election.
Wake up and smell reality. They are trying to scare you into voting Democrat by threatening things that just aren't true.
The Republicans forced this issue and brought up a bill just to make the Democrats put their money where their mouths are. Guess what, it failed miserably (2 - 402).
Please get informed before you vote. And please stop trying to spread silly lies to sway the votes of others. It's really sad.

Umm... there will be a complete revolt if he tried that... talk about the hypocracy of trying ot 'spread democracy' through the world if he is just going to muscle his way around congress.
It really isn't an issue anymore, he has no more political capital. With an approval rating of under 40, republicans are looking to distance themselves.

Enlistment and ReEnlistment are down, I wouldn't be surprised if a draft came. You can't get people to volunteer to an unlawful war, so you force them.

A thought. That way he can finally screw the last of the republicans that still support him at that time, particularly the young ones.
