I got a job offer from my "backup" company, and is still waiting on the company I want to work for. How long can I push them off, until I hear from the second company? Is a week ok?

Congratulations on the job offer. I think a week is reasonable to ask. But the first thing I would do is inform your "most desired" company that you have an offer. If they have any interest in hiring you, they will accelerate their decision and give you an offer of their own. Your job offer is great leverage to have for your primary company. Most companies want to have what other companies want. Best of luck.

Typically, a written offer will specify when they want a decision. If the company you want to work for has not made an offer, chances are they may not, but I would touch base and let them know that you have received another offer and must make a decision within the next few days. If they are interested, they will pronptly extend an offer.

I think you should let them know that you will be taking a week to make the decision. But a week should be fine.

advise them you are putting in a "two week" notice. it is proper business etiquette to do so, anyway. in the interim, that will buy you some time while you wait to see if the other place calls.
