I think it's because people still think of Bon Jovi as just a rock band. Don't get me wrong, I like them too. But U2 takes a stand for things that are unjust in the world. They've also attempted to cross over into other genres by doing songs with people like Mary J Blige and Tony Bennet.

I think that either band that you like will have a special meaning to you. All music if done well will resonate differently with different people. With that said I personally feel that U2 has done more for wordly issues through their songs and their own personal actions and therefore U2 may strike a chord with more people. No knock on Bon Jovi I personally am a musician and a child of the 80's so I am indebted to that band but at the end of the day I put U2 in a category of bands that have made huge musical change, while Bon Jovi have remained "hair rock". True staying power will be the only thing that answers this question as we have already forgotten some of Bon Jovi's early peers (Stryper, or Ratt for instance) but it is a fun question to debate anyway.

Wrong!!! It's true that Bon Jovi and U2 are both overflowing bands with extreme talent, but Bono is a way better lyrical writer! Maybe one of the best ever! Ranks right up there (when it comes to inspiring and true meanings) with John Lennon, Robert Smith's best stuff, etc... I love both, but I don't know how you could possibly come to your conclusion that Jon Bon Jovi is a better writer... Seen both Live! Let me tell you that Bon Jovi puts on a great Rock Show! However, seeing Bono and U2 Live is like a whole other experience. His stage presence is phenomenal!!! They are both great Rock Stars, though... Check-out The Gufs, too... If you're into a lot of the music that I am into, then you'll enjoy them... Fun question. Thanks!!!

U2 is much better than Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi writes commercial, poppy songs. Grant it, their songs like Dead or Alive, Living on a Prayer, Blaze of Glory are good song. But U2 is a much better band. Bono is a great lyricist. Their songs have so much meaning to them. I wouldn't Even put them in the same category of music.

First off, U2 has MORE hit songs than Bon Jovi, and have been around since 1979. Bon Jovi didn't hit big until 1984 (?), and simply don't have as many hit songs.

Secondly, U2 has more international acclaim and sales than Bon Jovi.

Third, Bon Jovi hasn't been producing as many records as U2. Check out the numbers over the past ten years alone, you'll see that U2 has been more productive.

That's why U2 makes more money.

It's true I think that Bon Jovi writes better songs, is a better singer, Richie is a better guitarist, etc etc etc.
The fact of the matter, though, is content. People want to listen to U2 to make other people think that they are into world issues. Bono writes political music. In that way he is just like John Lennon. For me that's what makes it un-friggin'-bearable to listen to them.I have no need for social esteem. I want music to lift me up, NOT make me feel like my world is a crapyard.
However that's just my opinion. Jon Bon Jovi writes about what he knows. things that he's seen. How he grew up. What he dreamt about. That's what a great musician does. He tells you HIS story. Then for those out there who's story coincides. It makes them feel not so alone. It brings them to the realization that there are others out there just like them.
That's GREAT music. But alas that is only my opinion.
See Easy.

Bon Jovi is awesome. I dont listen to U2, and have no desire too.
They might make more money because Bon Jovi took a break for a while, and U2 charges to much for crap!

Because people think by listening to U2 they are somehow more righteous. Bon Jovi is a "hair band" and there for a guilty pleasure.

That's all a matter of opinion! Bon Jovi writes "fluffy" stuff....U2 actually has something to say.
