Western interest in African art seems to begin with the modernists, especially Picasso. His images often recall the technique and color of African art.

Egypt is in Africa. Egyptian art strongly influanced the art Western world. Egyptian furniture styles, jewelery, and other forms of art were in high demand, sort of like they wanted to obtain something from an exotic land.

the romans had a saying,"there is always something new coming out of africa!!"the instruments that collectively led the the creation of the "piano" came from africa as did numerous others;the hide drum, the turtle shell lyre, the rico-rico,stringed instruments with drawn wires, cymbals of brass and copper;mobile drums on draft animals like elephants, camels and horses!!!in modern times the art of Picasso was very much influenced by african masks and idols of wood that he avidly collected!!!egypt is african and has a very old culture that probably yielded the free-standing column, wall murals with fine carvings in the living rock,free-standing human representational statuary, bas relief carvings, writtenlanguage combined with art, governmental decorated structures, massive -impressive structure to symbolize government or rulers' power!!!!life like representations of life-sized animals as at tassili rocks in the hoggar region of the sahara...so ancient that the animals depicted have long since varnished from the completely environmentally changed area!!reproductions of scenes from everyday life;hunting, gathering, fishing and warfare were depicted in much early african art in very detailed and informative styles of carving, stone sculture and painting on many types of surfaces and materials!!the beautiful bust of nerfertiti is a superlative example of african genius!!!a timeles statement of immortal beauty!!THE MAGNIFICENT BRONZES OF BENIN ARE ANOTHER!!there is much produced in gold that shows great craft and facility with this precious metal in granulation and lost-wax techniques, annealing and weldingin chiefly regalia and totems of office!!

Think about the influx of natural resources from Africa to Europe and the West at large; I'm sure that had something to do with it. Also all the people we stole from Africa and brought to the west might have something to do with it too - just a guess.
