Have you ever had any communication with them? It is possible to build a relationship with someone even though you've never met them. So I guess it's possible to miss someone you've never met.

It may not make any sense, but yes you can. I have a net friend who lives 3000 miles away. We have never met, but we've talked through email for 3 years. If we don't write for a week or two, one of us will check on the other. It's a nice connection.

Sure it makes sense. If you have corresponded with someone via e-mail and then, for no apparent reason, the e-mails stop and yours go unanswered, it can seem like a friend has disappeared and they are missed. Had it happen.
