Anyone ever hear of keeping a baby on formula until 15 mos? When I say this, I mean no cow's milk. And then starting cow's milk after 15 mos and no more then 6 oz. a day. Oh, also this person is allowed to give their baby 2% milk to start (not whole).

I should also add that's she's small for her age.. she is 27 inches long and 17 lbs. She was 2 weeks premature and the mother was on a medicine during her pregnancy.

Thanks for everyone's answers! She is getting all this direction from the baby's doctor. I have a 2 yr old and a 10 month old myself, and everthing she told me seemed contradicting to what my child's doctor has said.

While it is not common, there are different reasons for keeping babies on formula feedings or breast milk. If the child has PKU (phenylketonuria) a genetic disease, he or she may be kept on formula for several years. Also many children with severe allergies or digestive problems are fed formula for years. I know of a five-year old who still drinks formula exclusively for the benefits of the partially broken down proteins and the hypoallergenic benefits. Usually for healthy children the plan is for breast milk or formula until 12 months of age and then whole cow's milk (unless contraindicated) until 24 months. I would ask the doctor why he or she feels this is necessary for the baby and if the parent still has questions please seek a second opinion from a pediatric dietician or pediatric gastroenterologist. I wish you all the best

That doesn't sound right to me. My 20 month old's pediatrician told me to give her whole milk at 12 months. She said that whole milk helps brain development. Is this child on the older baby formula? (I've seen some formula in the stores that's for babies over 12 months) For peace of mind, if it was me, I'd get a second opinion from another pediatrician. The limitation of 6 oz a day is ok- I've heard that too much milk can affect the way a baby's body absorbs vitamins and minerals from other foods.

i never kept my boys on formula.... after about 9-10 months i switched to whole milk...and a "pediasure" a day. If the baby is so small, i dont know why she wouldnt give it whole milk. Your supposed to give whole milk till atleast 2 years, but if they are small, ou want to give as much fat and calories you can. Baby is probably still small, cause formula isnt enough for the baby. Is she geting this info from a doc? shes obviously not reading the books ( which i dont believe the books are the bible but they have good guidelines to follow) This baby shoudl also be having ATLEAST 24 oz of milk a day! WHOLE MILK!!!

I see nothing wrong with it. In fact doesn't Similac make a formula that is for specifically babies 12-18 months?

Myself, I breastfed my twins for 2 months, had then on formula until 10 months, whole milk from 10-12 months and 2% milk from 12 months on... they are 5 now, and turned out just fine LOL!

They can have the formula or breast as long as they want.......
but when they do a switch they should give whole milk........and then AFTER 2 years old they can give 2%.

They need the whole milk because kids need the fat....
unless this kid is a BIG 15 month old the doctor told her to put them on 2%.

?????

i really dont think it would be necessary for the baby to be on formula that long. In fact I think it would be better for the baby to get whole milk at this age because babies need the fat thats in it. Or at least 2% milk. Formula after age 1 really isn't common practice.

They should be on whole milk bc of the fat. It's good for their brains. if you're going to switch from formula to milk I would suggest mixing the two. First mostly formula and a little milk. Keep upping the amount of milk you put in until you're giving them all milk and no formula. I did this to my little girl after she turned one and she never noticed that I was giving her something different.

No. Use whole milk at 1. Don't do 2% until they are 2. My neighbor had her kids on formula until they were 3 but that was because she was lazy and didn't want to feed them.

Never heard of a doctor keeping baby on formula this long.My doctor says whole milk until age 2,than they give 2% milk.I have WIC also & this is what they give.Maybe her doctor is concerned about his/her weight gain & that is why they are keeping baby on formula for so long.

She should be on half formula and half 2% so she can get used to the milk. my daughter is going to be a year and at 10 months the doc had us put half formula and half 2%.
