Absolutely.

People have suffered permanent paralysis as a result of gas bubble formation (caused by rapid ascents) and subsequent nerve damage to their brains or spinal cords. And they were the lucky ones. The unlucky ones ended up in a coffin.

You can get the bends from a single 'technical' (i.e. with obligatory deco stops) dive, if you miss some/all of your stops, or exceed your preplanned ascent rate. Most tekkies use about 10 m per min from 'shallow' depths (i.e. less than 100 m / 330'), reducing that in the final 3-6m of the ascent.

BUT you could also theoretically get the bends from multiple repetitive sport ('no stop') diving (e.g. a week-long diving holiday where you did 3-5 dives daily), if you made a rapid ascent from one of the dives towards the end of the series.

This is because your body may have accumulated more residual nitrogen than your table/computer can account for (they're just models, after all), and which you haven't given your body enough time to off-gas.

The Diver's Alert Network (DAN) currently recommends that divers on extended diving holidays have a day out of the water for every 3-4 days of diving, to give them that extra off-gassing time.

Nitrox is also worth looking into, used with time limits and pressure groups/residual nitrogen counts derived from an air dive table/computer. This reduces your nitrogen tissue loading per dive, and can theortetically make a big cumulative difference at the end of a week or two.

Remember, those who live fast, tend to die young.

I was on a dive boat in Guam, with about fifteen divers. One of these was a military guy, who went way to deep for his experience, panic ed and shot to the surface. He jumped up on the dive boat, took off his gear, and was to proud to say what happened. The captain asked him is he was ok, and the guy told him that he just had gear issues. A couple of minutes later, he was dead.
You get a ride in a decompression chamber if you are lucky, you get a wheelchair if your a little less lucky, or else you get a coffin.

Yes but its not necessarily the bends. Its could be an embolism. Gas is forced into the blood stream by holding your breath and ascending. This bubble then expands on ascent and if it ends up in the CNS then it can cause paralysis.

If you are lucky. A severe case of "the bends" is often fatal, unless your dive boat has an on-board decompression unit.

Yes, if you come up to quick, you get the BENDS, and this is when nitrogen bubbles form in your blood and damage nerves, particularly in the spine and brain sometimes I am told.

You can get the bends from resurfacing too quickly as the nitrogen in the blood stream expands too quickly. This only happens when you have been diving at depth - normal scuba diving will not cause this.

yes nitrogen forms bubbles in your bloodstream causing the"bends" that's why you have to make decompression stops on the way up from depth
