Put a jack under the lower control arm and jack it up so the wheel is about 6 inches off the floor. Have someone watch while you grab the wheel top and bottom and alternately pull and push. If it moves, either the upper or lower is worn. Grab the front and back and alternately push and pull, and if there is movement there, you have bad tie rod ends or worn steering rack.

Jack it up, Remove the wheel & put a jackstand under the lower A-frame. Drop the car onto the jack stand. Using a long steel bar through a hole in the upper A-frame; Pull down HARD If the ball joint's bad; The A-frame will noticably move.

IF YOU HAVE A LIFT OR JACK, YOU CAN DO IT BY JACKING IT UP AND PUTTING JACK STANDS UNDER THE FRAME TO MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T FALL ON YOU AND THEN SEE IF YOU CAN MOVE THE BALL JOINTS. YOU SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE THEM. IF YOU CAN MOVE THEM, THEN THEY ARE BAD.
