I don't mean official moderators or people who occasionally redirect or instruct newbies to a forum by advising them of the rules. I'm talking about people who can't seem to refrain from embarrassing, harrassing and critiquing any and every little thing they can find fault with. I know there has to be tons of them out there in cyber space. It seems to me that these people either have way too much time on their hands or some sort of personality disorder. Can somebody who understands the human mind better than I do please explain?

I am not talking about responding to stupidity, just unnecessary input that isn't meant to be helpful so much as it's meant to make the writer feel superior.

Unfortunately I do this, but I do it both online and to people who show the equal amount of retardation in real life. I conquer stupidity in the masses online, it's a nice place for it all to just "build up". So far my experience has shown that most of the people flaming others are actually pretty intelligent and clever individuals, don't be stupid around them and they're great people. Besides that I've had a pretty clean stretch of people who think with logic, I haven't said anything bad to anyone in a while, gratz people!

There is nothing wrong in trying maintain some sort of standard in a site like this one for instance. Personally I only report serious abuse like Rudeness , racial or religious bigotry and intolerance. But this is not because I want to have unlimited power I want people to be nice to one another and respect each other.

We all have our faults. Like you for example, trying to police the internet police. Can you honestly say you're not struggling to read something like this:
why cant i c u if ur online an im nt?
Still, its funny to see someone gripe about the same thing they are doing. like the old joke "stop your ****ing cussing you mother ****er"

These people are usually not heard in their lives. Internet is a perfect outlet. The best we can do is ignoring them.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to arrest you for posting this question.
But seriously, being that way on the internet is safe for them and empowers them. They are probably complete cowards in real life.

Because they are idiots. Probably very insecure about themselves. It gives them a kick.
