There is a type of soil on mars (I think it is iron based) much like red clay which give the red planet its distintive appearance in the sky.
The dominant Feature on the Earth is water. This natural color is also shows itself off if you are orbiting earth. The planet appears (at times) to be surrounded by a blue "blanket"

Well its pretty obvious. Mars looks red or at least a readish brown and if you look at earth from outer space it looks blue. Its as simple as that.
