Sorry your friend is having such a rough time in military. Roughness and unfairness seems de rigeur for armed forces.
Initially, I was staunchly in favor of the Iraq invasion. The fear of a nuke set off in US or Europe was enough to justify about anything.
Then gradually, I realized it was all a total scam. If there had been WMDs, Bush would not have stopped until they were found and the world vindicated him. But they have not been shown, because it seems crystal-clear that the objective all along was to get Iraq and Iran. So now the US is surrounding Iran on both sides. The propaganda against Iran is almost a perfect parrot of that used to stir up anger and fear against Saddam. Bush knows he can just keep escalating because the US has nukes. This is all a repeat of Vietnam. The two worst presidents of the last 50 years are LBJ and GWB.
I hate it most for those guys who have to stay awake in the desert heat for days with nothing but coffee, smokes and fear.
All the while America looks terrible, half a trillion dollars gone.
Like the boy who cried "WOLF!", when there is a *real* security emergency, the people who *used to be* America's friends are going to say "what scam are those freaks up to now?"
I am afraid the rest of the world is going to cosy up to Russia and China, because we are no longer the "good cop". We are the bad cop.

A guy I grew up with , a Sgt in the Canadian army in Afghanistan was killed two days ago .I also have a nephew who has a new baby and a new wife who is there. That being said , something has to be done to stop the terrorists.People are saying that this fighting has been going on for hundreds of years and we are wasting out time. From that I think , well it's about time is was stopped. There was a time on this planet when everyone was aggressive and fought with one another but civility has come about for a good portion of us and we need to help others find it.
There was a time in the USA's not so distant past when people actually had slaves and thought they had a right to....no, really I am not kidding. They really thought this was perfectly ok, but eventually ,after a war ( I hope this news isn't shocking anyone) the slaves were freed and when we look back it seems ridiculous.
This can be achieved all over the world .It there a price?Yes, all things worthwhile have prices in some form. The question isn't do we need to be there. It should be , why has the United Nations not done more to stop this before. Why has the UN let China away ( China is actually a part of the UN if you can believe that) with it's blatant human right violations. They even gave them the Olympic Games , what's that all about?
Now we have another serious concern with North Korea and the threat of nuclear war.Should we ignore this too?

Nobody really likes war, but I feel this is necassary for our nations well being. Even though Iraq did not join in the attacks on 9/11 they are suspected of helping from the sidelines. As for our govt. no war should be fought by politicans but our military. Our troops are spead to thin and replacements are few. For this reason troops sent home usually get sent back after a short time home. You are right though the war is sort of going nowhere, because of political pressures from other nations that dont support our country.

I've been against it all along, as punishing the Iraqi people for an act committed by a bunch of Saudis never made sense to me.
Before we started murdering Iraqis, 48% of Americans opposed the war, only 42% supported it -- and that's amazing, considering most Americans believed the lies that Iraq committed 9/11 and was nuking us a week from Thursday.
Although I deplore the loss of life of the troops of the Coalition of the Insane, I am much more upset by the untold loss of life of innocent Iraqis, not to mention the torture of who-knows-how-many, the destruction of entire cities, infrastructure, and the destabilization of the country.
Not to mention that women who used to be able to go outside alone wearing whatever they liked now have to drape themselves in scarves and be accompanied by male relatives.
Not to mention how many people all over the world who used the think this country was basically a decent place and now consider us to be the most brutal and heartless people in the world.
Not to mention how the resources of the country were turned over to known thieves who immediately started stealing who-knows-how much money (billions?).
Not to mention the money that we've spent in this war, thereby impoverishing our own country.
Put me down as against.

its a mixed story
Iraq lost its terror- Saddam - but also got a reign of confusion - no one knows how to control the country any more....
as for the US 0 they need to get out and leave behind a peace keeping force from the UN - its not their business to be there anymore !!
I feel terribly sorry for the people of Iraq - first they suffered due to Saddam - now they suffer by his absence !!

seems like mistake. gwb consults with god instead of dad about iraq?
understaffed military employed the reserves & didnt have to draft the rich along with the poor.
3 possible solutions now.
cut & run
stay the course [seemingly hopeless]
increase troops & possible draft [rich & poor]
who is going to run on a draft agenda?
seems the pelicans have positioned themselves quite well on this.

No i trust our govt. I believe we are helping our contry and their country.
There is soo much that we dont know ,and the media does not know.
Our secret service does SECRET stuff. They have probably found so many things, and have prevented so many things from happening. We wouldnt know about it, because then the enemy would know too.
Have trust in our country. :)
