Judaism was in existence long before Islam; many of the beliefs of both Islam and Judaism come from the Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), so some observances are similar. I'm Jewish, so I can't speak to Islamic beliefs as much, but I suppose I don't think of the practices as being restraints or abstinence (except perhaps occasional ritual fasting); I tend to think of them mostly as opportunities to do good for others, or to try to follow a path that I believe to be honorable and decent, and that is hopefully one that will not do harm to others, to the world, or to myself.

Islam is an off-shoot of Judaism, so kept some of it's ideas. (Ditto Christianity, which also had its roots in Judaism.)
