I would save enough money so that you can have a decent life, and make sure to donate the rest in small blocks to charitable organizations that focus on action in the community. If you can make things happen with the money, it will mean much more than just donating to a church or organization that sits on the money and doesn't take noticeable steps. As to which organizations, use the IRS charity search and only donate to really legal charities, rather than 'just some guy'. I wish i could say that donating directly to me to support my art would do the community some real good, but all it would really do is benefit me personally for a while.

I am a little appaled by some of the responses. You obviously want to reach out and make an impact in the world around you, to shre a piece of yourself before your time is up. I share the same sentiment. I suggest giving to a couple of different orginizations or charities that fall in line with something you like and love. For instance I am a Christian and into media communications. I give money to a group called MasterMedia which is a foundation that helps Christians in the media industry. I also give money to a group through a friend that does African feeding projects. Also, did you know that for only $15,000 you can help create a well in Haiti, and provide clean drinking water for hundreds of people. (don't know the link, google it) Orphanages are always in need of financial help, and there are always community outreaches as well. I suggest that if you really want to help people, first begin looking inside yourself at the things that you love and care about, and find groups and orginizations that will further that love and interest. What good is it going to do you to spend all that money on yourself. You can leave a lasting impression for future people and generations. As much as we all like to think its all about us, its not really.

Is that $400 or $400,000? If the latter of the two you should donate money to research so that scientists can find a cure for your illness. Or you could donate money to an issue that moves you. Most importantly find a support group and spend time enjoying others who realize that each and every day matters and is precious. I pray that you and everyone else in this world find joy in each and every day on this earth. May God bless you and keep you safe and pain free!

Sadly, $400K is not that much in the big scheme of things. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet combined are spending $40 Billion dollars to fight disease in 3rd world countries - so why don't you spend the $400K on yourself and help people at the same time?
When you spend your money on yourself, it supports thousands of honest, hardworking people who are struggling to raise their families. Here are some things I would do in your situation:
1. Luxury Carrabean cruise.
2. Try skydiving or hang gliding.
3. Scuba dive the great barrier reef in Austrailia
4. Drive 175mph in a Porsche on the Autobahn in Germany
5. Visit Yosemite National Park - pehaps the most beautify place in the USA.
I say spend the money on yourself - it will still ultimately be distributed to working class people who need it!

It has to be something you've spent your lifetime saving, so if you know you only have a couple years, find a genuine friend and splurge. Make the next couple years the best. Fly around the world, spend your money finding your family tree since you say you dont have any. They are there, you just got to find them. And when you do. Show them all the love they could have found if they would have found you sooner.

Please give a big chunk of your money to local, hands-on animal clinics in your area (the no-kill clinics that rescue, rehabilitate, care for, and adopt out). Animals are the world's greatest treasures, and your money is best spent on the animals because they are so much worthier than we humans are. Godspeed to you and best wishes.

To be selfish, I would say give some to me to pay-off my bills (not single, with kids). Maybe give it to a local charity?
