I'm working on a research paper dealing with developments in ancient Chinese literature, and I'm looking for common ideas to explore so I can form an outline for this research paper. Any suggestions on where to start? (Forming my outline has always been my major obstacle, once I get the foundation on paper, I'm good to go) I'm not good at organizing my thoughts and ideas. I've already gathered some books and articles, just not sure what I should be focusing in on.

i think animals and spirits were very common...also monks as main characters, searching for something.... a lot of similes and metaphors to environmental things (mountains, plants, trees, rivers, etc).... many things about appeasing spirits (look at mulan, the disney movie... talk about generalization of chinese culture! :D)

good luck!

poems were an art form in China and still is today. The poet often composes the poem, writes it in calligraphy chinese (a practice that can take years to learn) and also draw the accompanying image. Poetry was often used to describe the themes of utmost importance to the Chinese people and it was rarely used for telling history, like in Greek or Roman epic poems. A lot of the themes that the poets write about are: balance of good/evil, the yin and the yang, the scenery (mountainside, river, moon, sun, anything) spirituality, animals and what they represent (ex. monkey=wise), gods and goddesses and ancient chinese tales. (ex. the story of mulan came from a famous chinese poem)

There is a definitely a worship of nature running through Chinese literature and poetry. This ties in with the Toaist philosophy. Also depending on what type of literature/poetry you are reading (it is a diverse output) there are political themes; scholarship themes; a tendency to history...

If we will follow some chinese films or chinese related films it would be how they value a certain artifact whether in a family or in a nation as a whole, that represents what they believe in. They would fight for it to keep it safe, and if lost they would use everything in order to return it.

Good luck!
